As the mother and son are attempting to sleep, Daniel is awaken by his mama to flee the building, due to a smell of smoke, and neighbors yelling, “FIRE!” In the midst of the frenzy, Jasmine, the cat has gone missing. Daniel and his mama are observing people running down the street with stolen merchandise. Mama explains to Daniel that the citizens are rioting. The lights have gone out and the city is in chaos. The story opens with Daniel, his mother, and Jasmine standing in a dark residence. He resides with his mother and cat, Jasmine. Young Daniel and his mother are caught up in some neighborhood trouble.
